A Farewell to Julieta
Dir. Lei Cheok Mei | Macau | 2026 | 29:00
The film A Farewell to Julieta records the demolition of Macau’s first modern public housing estate, Edifício Julieta Nobre de Carvalho, weaving folk memories of the estate through poems crafted from children’s dialogues, exploring the extensions of people and space. The open corridors fostered emotional connections among the elderly residents. Even after relocating, they still returned daily to gather. Through this, I glimpsed a deeper need among the elderly, realizing that while modern homes improve living conditions, they often overlook emotional needs. Adapting to new environments and rebuilding community ties is neither simple nor easy. After the building’s demolition, will the community’s memories also change or disappear?
The Sweet Native Tongue 甜蜜的土语 [dir. Yue Yang]
Dir. Yue Yang | Macau | 2026 | 17:30
Centered on Macanese Patuá theater, a national intangible cultural heritage of Macau, this film documents how the endangered Macanese Patuá language is being safeguarded and passed down in contemporary times. As a unique language of Macau that blends Eastern and Western influences, Patuá has gradually faded throughout history. The film follows Macanese inheritors such as Miguel de Senna Fernandes alongside young actors, showcasing their dedication to giving this ancient language a new voice through the medium of theater.
From family memories and cultural identity to theatrical creation and stage practice, they strike a balance between tradition and innovation. Through humorous, down-to-earth, and relatable dramas, they are bringing Patuá back to the general public.
The film records not only the survival of a language but also the cultural DNA of Sino-Portuguese coexistence, diversity, and inclusiveness that has characterized Macau for four hundred years. “The Sweet Native Tongue” serves as Macau’s most precious and tender cultural code, standing as a cultural treasure that belongs to both the city and the nation.
