A typhoon was forecast. Everyone was getting ready.
Her father brought a piano. She lifted the lid — where middle C should be, there was only a hole.
Jiang Ning chased his truck across half the city, into another home, into another child’s room. She saw a brand new piano. She left without taking anything.
The next day on the boat, her brother pulled a key from his pocket. Said she could have it.
She threw it into the river.
Then jumped in after it.
Moonlight fell through the ribs of an abandoned hull, splitting the floor into black and white. She stood up and began to play. When she reached the missing key, she shifted — and kept going.
Outside, someone was calling her name.
The typhoon never came. But something in this family had already been through the storm.
